Oral health.

Oral health is a fundamental condition for overall health, it is important to have care of it during all life, cleaning teeth and tongue properly every day, eating well and going to regular check-ups to the dentist. The rules to follow for a correct hygiene are not very much and they are the arm we have to oppose the formation of plaque and the physiological decay of the body.

Oral health is a common sign of health and a condition that improve self esteem and every aspect of social relationships, from the world of work to the sphere of feelings, since it is strictly bounded with the health of whole body. We know, for example, that indications of some pathologies can firstly appear in the mouth, or that in our mouth we can find signals of disfunctions that can affect other sites of the body. Since the early years of life a proper teeth alignment has a correspondance with a better posture, or grinding teeth may have been related with a condition of mental stress.

Healthy mouth. The critical factors.

Dentists and dental hygienists help patients to learn how to take care of their teeth and gums during the different stages of life and depending on their particular needs, as some genetic conditions can implicate a more o less important propensity for tooth decay or gum diseases; moreover severe pathologies as diabetes and others weaken the immune system or some kind of medications, as decongestants, antihistamines, painkillers, diuretics and antidepressants, can reduce saliva flow. As regards women, pregnancy or hormonal changes can affect oral health.

Mouth is a site full of bacteria, most of which are harmless; saliva is a natural disinfectant that washes away food and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria and help to protect from microbial invasion or overgrowth that might lead to disease. Saliva alone, of course, in not enought and dentists recommend to brushing your twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste: brushing has to be soft and gentle, most of all near the gum line, using small circular motions; is also usefull brushing tongue and toothbrush has to be replaced every three or four months. Then it’s important to floss at least once a day, with floss or interdental toothbrush, eating a balanced diet and limiting between-meal snacks and schedule regular dental check-ups to keep your smile, and yourself, healthy.
