Dental sedation.
The fear of the dentist is quite a spread commonplace, especially for children, but a large percentage of adults will likely be scared from the dentist’s office and this may represent a real problem; for example, some people are afraid of the dentist, some is terrified of needles, some suffer from anxiety: in all of these cases, sedation is the way to help them.
Sedation dentistry is a medical procedure to help everyone, from who can’t sit in the dentist’s chair to someone who needs a large amount of dental treatment and has to stay relaxed for a lot of time. It can be given during any type of treatment, even for a simple teeth cleaning.
Sedation is completely different from anaesthesia: anaesthesia is done in any case, even when the patient is sedated; anaesthesia is related to the dental treatment, sedation is related to the patient fear or anxiety.

Sedation dentistry uses different kind of sedative drugs, that are based on many kinds of medication such as diazepam, lorazepam, or hydroxyzine; sedation can be administered through inhaling, orally or through the vein. Depending on the amount of sedation, it can be more or less moderate and usually the patient remains awake.
Types of sedation used in dentistry are inhaled sedation when the patient breathes nitrous oxide combined with oxygen through a mask; this is the minimal sedation. Oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate; for minimal sedation, the patient takes a pill, while a larger dose may produce a moderate sedation.
Iv sedation.
IV sedation, that means Intravenous sedation, is when the sedative drug is injected through a vein, so it begins to work more quickly.
All these types of sedation don’t make the patient fall asleep, even if it is possible to sleep because of the effects produced by the sedative.
Finally, there is deep sedation or general anaesthesia that makes the patient totally unconscious.
Sedation procedures have been developed during these years to make it more comfortable and safe; thanks to it many people are able to undergo dental treatments and can regularly go to the dentist.

With sedation, people are often awake throughout the entire procedure, but they feel like their dental procedure lasts only a few minutes and likely won’t remember much about the treatment.
