Porcelain veneers are a kind of dental veneers made of porcelain; others kind of dental veneers are made up of composite resin. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are applied on the external surface of the teeth for reshape their appearance and improve the colour of the enamel.
Many foods or drinks, as tea, coffee or wine, tobacco and medicines can stain the teeth, the enamel can be thin or damaged by trauma or diseases, teeth may be chipped or broken, irregularly shaped or gaps may be among them: in these cases, porcelain veneers may be a solution to restablish a perfect smile. Porcelain is usually considered better than resin because it can mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth.
Porcelain veneers cost.
Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic treatment so the price is not very cheap; the cost may range from 500 to 1,300 dollars per tooth, but the price can vary according to the part of the country the work is done or the extent of the treatment. As a cosmetic work, it is usually not included in dental insurance.

Dental veneers is not considered a reversible treatment; usually this kind of work takes three or four visits to the dentist, to make a check of the teeth and decide the best way to gain the result. Once preliminary phases are concluded, the dentist has to remove a very thin layer of enamel, almost a millimeter: the enamel has to be removed to create a room for the veneers, so is not possible to have the teeth back as before.

Porcelain veneers.
Usually porcelain veneers are considered a useful solution in many cases, but there are some side effects that have to be considered: since a layer of enamel is removed, more tooth sensitivity can be experienced, at least in the first days. Also, veneers are brittle or can dislodge and fall off, so it is better do not bite your nails, chew on pencils, ice, or other hard objects. Patients who grind or have unhealthy teeth are poor candidates for this treatment.
Porcelain veneers require the same daily oral care as usual and can last between 5 and 10 years.
